Extreme worl poverty must end, and we have the power to do it

We watched Live 8 yesterday. It was on TV all day, and live on the internet, and as we did our cleaning and stuff we watched. There were some pretty awesome concerts (and some were not so good), and there were some interesting pairings. An example would be Stevie Wonder and the guy from Maroon 5 (what or who did he do to get that gig?), U2 and Paul McCartney were a good pairing and BEP looked awe-struck to be sharing a stage with the Marleys.

However cool the concerts across the G8 countries and in Africa were, (as the musicians and others kept mentioning) yesterday was not only a day of great music, but also a day of a very important message: beat world poverty. This is such an important mission, as one star said yesterday (Brad Pitt I believe) how can where we are born to determine our right to life?

Anyone who missed what yesterday was all about there is a petition on-line to sign that will be brought to the G8 summit in Scotland urging the G8 countries to forgive the debt of the poorest countries, give better and more aid, make trade law fair and inclusive of the developing countries, and make ending world child poverty a priority as well as a thing of the past. As the message repeated throughout the day said: every 3 seconds a child dies of extreme poverty.

Every 3 seconds.

3 seconds.

People, this is not something to take lightly. Go to live8live.com and sign the petition. Or at the very least, go and educate yourself about the cause and make your decision from there.

It really makes us look at our own lives in a whole new light. We complain about not having enough money to take a vacation, to buy a house, to buy a new car or whatever it is that we want (or think we need), but we are so rich here in Canada, or the US, or Europe or any of the developed countries (we dont say first or third world anymore, its not politically correct in fact, it is not PC that we as developed countries have allowed the extreme poverty to continue as it has for so long).

Is it possible to shame the leaders of the riches countries in the world to do the right thing? I hope so.
